For their 2021-22 season, I was asked by Ian Belknap to create artwork for The Acting Company’s production of this Shakespearean romantic comedy about love’s excesses. Dedicated to the development of young classical actors, TAC brings high quality professional theatre to hundreds of small towns and major cities across America through its national touring repertories.
This “rejected” poster art was a favorite of mine. As a general rule, I find the more complex the plot of a play, the simpler the poster art imagery should be. Twelfth Night involves a shipwreck, cross-dressing, musical interludes, twins reunited, and mistaken identity. This striking image was designed to evoke a nautical vibe as well as a sense of romance and excitement in its use of bright, saturated colors.
