THE KING AND I — I’d already enjoyed a long and successful association with The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization when Ted Chapin asked me to design what would become the “official” posters for six R&H musicals. The goal of these posters: designed so that even without their title logos attached, a licensing client could identify the show. The secondary concept was for the artwork to possess the feel of a travel poster to fuel the imagination. The R&H group was pleased with all the final artwork chosen from each individual presentation.
Here is a “rejected” design from 2012 for one of my all-time favorite musicals, The King and I. The look is exotic, glamorous, romantic, and glittery—attributes that spring to mind when thinking of the story of Mrs. Anna and her relationship with the blustery King of Siam.
