OKLAHOMA! — The names Rodgers and Hammerstein are synonymous with musical theatre magic. I was thrilled when Ted Chapin asked me to design the “official” posters to be used by their licensing clients for six major R&H shows. Their group was pleased with all the final artwork chosen from each individual presentation.
One of my “rejected” poster designs for Oklahoma! celebrated what is arguably the most famous lyric in the history of stage musicals: “Oh, what a beautiful morning’.”A great expanse of blue sky frames representations of the main characters, Laurey and Curly, in the form of a butterfly fluttering on a weathered cowboy hat. The poster features bright, highly saturated colors highlighting the feeling of the perfect start to a brilliantly sunny day.
