CAROUSEL — In 2014, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Ted Chapin asked me to begin designing the “official” poster to be used by their licensing clients for Carousel. Their group was pleased with the final piece chosen from my art presentation. Although numbered in the “rejected” pile, I find this poster to be highly effective.
One of the challenges in creating advertising art for a show that will be used by various companies regionally is that any facial likenesses should be avoided. Each cast will be totally different. Over the years, I’ve employed high contrast techniques, photo retouching, silhouettes, and (as is the case here) wall shadows to show the main characters of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan without actually identifying their faces. I feel this unpublished art conveys the essence of what makes this musical hauntingly romantic.
