The artist's narrative:

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE — Previously, I’d had the honor of designing the posters for The Kennedy Center’s 2003 Tennessee Williams Explored celebration, which included Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Glass Menagerie, and A Streetcar Named Desire. Fast forward to 2013, ten years later, it was a particular challenge to be asked to create fresh ideas for the Yale Repertory production of Streetcar.

Although my final poster concept selected by the Yale folks involved photography of the actress portraying Blanche (a later version further added the actor playing Stanley), I remain partial to this “rejected” graphic artwork. I feel it best captures the mood and gritty drama of Williams’ theatrical masterpiece with its illustrative use of light, shadow, and rough pebbled textures.
