The artist's narrative

1776 — My “official” poster design, approved by New York City Center’s Encores! for this 2016 musical staging, has a more reverent tone. I prefer the distinctly whimsical accent that this “rejected” poster displays. The drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence set to music sounds like an iffy proposition for a Broadway show (especially when it premiered in pre-Hamilton 1969), but this Sherman Edwards-Peter Stone vehicle went on to win great reviews and the Best Musical Tony Award.

The concept behind my unpublished artwork was to depict the John Adams persona as somewhat of a superhero, quill in hand, as dreams of celebratory fireworks fill his head. The circle of stars surrounding him represents the original thirteen colonies, and is reminiscent of their configuration on the first American flag.
