NICK & NORA — Broadway was anticipating a smash hit when the Arthur Laurents-Charles Strouse-Richard Maltby, Jr. musical version of the belovedThe Thin Manseries was announced in 1991. The characters of the madcap high society couple, Nick & Nora Charles (along with their clever terrier, Asta), personified sophistication and seemed a natural fit for the stage.
I enjoyed meeting and presenting my poster ideas to director and playwright Arthur Laurents. Although my work was well-received, the production was awarded to a rival ad agency. That, of course, meant my art would never see the light of day. From what amounted to a dozen of my proposed poster designs, this remains my favorite. It was to be printed in black and white, textured with a dot screen to simulate vintage crime journals, while stylistically echoing the legendary series of Hollywood films.
