MATILDA — Adapted from the twisted children’s novel by Roald Dahl, the Tim Minchin-Dennis Kelly musical had been playing to sold-out houses in the West End since 2011. It was announced in 2012 that the hit show would be produced on Broadway in the coming year. I was contacted by the ad agency and was asked to design new poster art, since the Royal Shakespeare Company wanted to explore alternatives to the image they’d been using in Great Britain for three years (ever since their initial Stratford-upon-Avon premiere).
The story revolves around the power of books, learning, and one young girl’s astonishing imagination. As with the London campaign, I employed the alphabet as a graphic device, but chose to have an explosion of letters form Matilda’s portrait. Ultimately, the decision was made to keep the campaign as it already existed, but it was a fun project nonetheless.
