INTO THE WOODS — In 1987, Martin Beck Theatre (now renamed for Al Hirschfeld) found itself home to the second of three Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musicals. Into the Woods cleverly combines a number of classic fairy tales. The cast of characters includes Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Witch, The Baker’s Wife, a couple of Princes, and Jack (from Beanstalk fame).
After an initial art meeting, it was clear to me that the show’s creatives were interested in focusing on The Giant and/or The Wolf as central figures in the advertising. My concept illustrates The Giant shaking out a variety of players from their storytelling pages into the woods below. This was my initial black and white concept sketch. Sadly, a later full-color version has been lost. Although fond of my poster, it ultimately played second fiddle to Heidi Landesman’s brilliant design which featured The Wolf.
